Lieutenant Adnan Saidi came to Singapore in 1942 to defend Singapore against the Japanese. He led the Malay Regiment ‘C’ Company in a fierce battle against the invading Japanese forces at Bukit Chandu on February 14, 1942. While the other members of his contingent were shot, it was said that Lieutenant Adnan was tortured and burnt to death. The heroic efforts of him and his company are now memorialized at Memories at Bukit Chandu, a World War II Memorial Musuem. This Life Story will also cover Lieutenant Adnan’s personal life. He married Sophia Pakir, a teacher, and together they had two boys and a girl. It was reported that his daughter unfortunately passed away when she was barely two years old.
